Homeland @ the 18th Valdivia IFF (Locations)
Posted in ENGLISH, FESTIVALS with tags homeland, χώρα προέλευσης, valdivia IFF on October 1, 2011 by homelandfilmHomeland, together with Attenberg & Wasted Youth @ the Locations Section of the 18th FICValdivia (Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia) in Chile, 11-16 October 2011.
“This year, we grouped under the common denominator Locations those countries and geographic zones whose cinematography has appeared so striking as to merit featuring in their own section.
The first guest is Greece. In the last two years, the young Greek cinema has surprised the world with films in which dysfunctional families and the mix of dramatic and humorous situations amount to a fully innovative vision. Valdivia will show three of these feature films: HOMELAND (Official Selection at Venice 2010), ATTENBERG (Official Selection at Venice 2010) and WASTED YOUTH (Official Selection at Rotterdam 2011).”

Homeland – by Gunnar Bolin (Sveriges Radio)
Posted in DECEIVE! BETRAY! TERRORIZE!, ENGLISH, FESTIVALS with tags gunnar bolin, homeland, homeland film on January 16, 2011 by homelandfilmThis is a film that dares to interweave a heavy individual tale with social evolution, a film that is challenging in terms of both art and politics, and that on top of all this manages to maintain high artistic qualities. Doesn’t that sound like exactly the sort of thing that nagging writers are always going on about? Viola! The feature debut of young Syllas Tzoumerkas has it all. It tells the story of a family tragedy afflicting three generations of a Greek family, while interweaving the nation’s history from the junta years of the 1960s, past the leftist 1970s and right up to the student revolts of today. Several aspects of Greek society are in for a beating; the patriarchy, the family and sanctimonious politics. You have to pay attention ? as there are some chronological leaps here ? but the viewer who stays alert will be richly rewarded.
Gunnar Bolin, Sveriges Radio programentry?filmId=172509

Opening towards dirty memories
Posted in DECEIVE! BETRAY! TERRORIZE!, ENGLISH with tags annika gustafsson, homeland, homeland film, syllas tzoumerkas on January 3, 2011 by homelandfilmby Annika Gustafsson (Sydsvenskan)
FILM. In the shadow of the deep economic crisis a new generation of film makers are appearing. Despite small production budgets and while waiting for the Papandreou government to pull through a better and more modern state program for film making, a line of younger film makers are attracting attention with titles such as ”Dogtooth”, ”Homeland”, ”Attenberg” and ”Apnea”. (…) The Greeks aren’t just fighting a financial crisis. These movies also confirm that there is also an identity crisis, that at times require both looking back and as well as opening up for dirty memories, in order to move ahead. (…) “Homeland” by Syllas Tzoumerkas starts off with a tragic, fictional incident, when a couple take over the son of a psychologically unstable sister. In flashbacks we’re told the story about the adoption. At the same time the story happens in Athens and Thessaloniki of today, the riots of last autumn with the well-known police shooting of a young demonstrator, as well as the oppressing regime of military junta 1967-1974. In “Homeland” the grown-up sons start uncovering one layer after another about their background, something that becomes a metaphor for the political development of the last 40 years.
